Born in 1952, Dr. Ian Gilmour is a former Scottish distance runner and Anglo-Scot internationalist who competed for both Scotland and Great Britain in the 1970s and 1980s. He started as a high jumper, winning the English schools junior title in 1966. He began serious training at Birmingham University in 1970 and became an international runner for 10 years. A noted 3000m steeplechaser (with a personal best of 8:31.09 in July 1978) and cross-country runner, he was known for maintaining a low profile despite significant success on the national and international stage. An international runner for 10 years, he finished 8th in the 3000m steeplechase in the 1978 Commonwealth Games, and as a Triathlon competitor came 10th in his age group, in the 2009 world championship sprint distance.
