    Sport

Sport plays a central role in the school's aims to encourage all our pupils to develop their potential by setting themselves the highest standards of excellence and achievement with integrity and confidence.

Thank you to our sponsors of BWS Sports

BWS has a proud history and tradition of sporting provision, whether it is for our top performers or the beginner. Sport plays a central role in the school's aims to encourage all our pupils to develop their potential by setting themselves the highest standards of excellence and achievement with integrity and confidence. The school's broad range of sport activities provides students with a well-rounded, balanced education catering for a wide range of talents and interests and adds great enjoyment to students school life.

We are committed to providing inclusive, challenging and enriching Physical Education and sporting opportunities, which promote high standards of performance and a positive attitude towards sport and physical activity for life, to inspire and motivate all our pupils to lead happy, purposeful and responsible lives. We strive for national recognition across a wide range of sports and compete on a local, regional and national level, with a multitude of sports available and success achieved across the board. We also encourage our students to compete outside of school in order to gain an invaluable team and social experience. This enables both BWS and the clubs to benefit from a more knowledgeable, experienced and skilled pool of talent.

Sport and physical activity provides an environment where we are able to learn most about ourselves and others. Out on the playing fields, in a cave, out in the woods or half way up a rock face we often find ourselves doing things, thinking things and surprising ourselves like never before. Physical activity and developing a physical literacy stimulates not only the body but also the mind and facilitates a making of bonds with others that are not easily broken. Here lie some of the key reasons why physical activity is central to BWS, the building of skills, the building of friendships and the building of individuals motivated and determined to go out and enrich the world in which we all live.

    Sports Options

*currently an option for both boys and girls, however other options eg football may become available depending on numbers.

    HSLA

The Level 3 Award in Higher Level Sports Leadership course is an option for our Year 12 to choose as a fourth option.

The prime aim of the award is to prepare responsible, motivated and confident people who can independently lead safe, purposeful and enjoyable sporting and recreational activities for small groups. The award is also designed to encourage people to get involved in the organisation and provision of sport on a sustained voluntary basis, some of whom will then choose employment in sport.

It concentrates on improving leadership skills required to plan, prepare, deliver and evaluate a session. A number of National Governing Bodies have created specific progression awards which allow the successful candidate special access to their first coaching award in recognition of the skills, knowledge and abilities they gain during their CSL training. The course is run across the whole year with a mix of classroom and practical time preparing candidates for placements in primary schools and the wider community.

The main event for the students is ultimately the Primary Tag Rugby Festival, which they coordinate and run on the day. Around 30 local primary schools compete in this highly successful event, which is a testament to our students' ability to operate in this environment.

    Sports Subs

Sport at Bishop Wordsworth’s School is about far more than results. It builds confidence, resilience, teamwork, leadership and lifelong friendships. It teaches young people how to handle success and disappointment, how to support one another, and how to strive for excellence.

Each year, over 500 students represent the school in sport, taking part in fixtures, tournaments, festivals, Schools Championships, and a wide range of training opportunities. Whether competing at regional or national level, or playing for a school team, every student gains enjoyment and experience from being involved.

Providing these opportunities, however, comes at a significant cost. Last year, the school spent over £20,000 on the direct costs of competitive sport. Sports subscriptions contributed £15,000, but this still left a shortfall that the school had to cover from its reserves, as government funding does not support competitive sporting activities.

We are therefore asking families whose children represent the school in sport to support our Sports Subscription scheme. No student will ever be excluded if a contribution is not made, but when most parents participate, it enables us to sustain, and continue to grow, the sporting opportunities available to all.

    The BWS Sport Subscription includes:

    • Transport to fixtures and tournaments
    • Competition entry fees
    • Specialist facility hire
    • Referees and umpires
    • Catering and first aid provision
    • Strength & Conditioning programmes

BWS Sports Subscription Costs (Paid Annually)

BWS Sport is one of the great strengths of our school. Thank you for helping us ensure that current and future students can continue to benefit from the opportunities, experiences and memories that school sport provides.
