All students at BWS are entitled to a rich and challenging provision of academic and co-curricular experiences and we act to ensure that, as far as is reasonably achievable, that pupils with SEN and medical conditions share the same educational opportunities as others, so that they can achieve their best, become confident individuals living fulfilling lives and make a successful transition into adulthood, whether into employment, further or higher education or training.
All staff play an important role in helping to identify and assess any SEND as early as possible. Where a student's needs arise or change during their time at school, and these needs may require additional support, the teacher will initiate a programme of intervention. After this intervention, if required, the information will be passed to the Learning Support Coordinator so that further assessment can be triggered. The Learning Support team cooridinate different strands of evidence and after completing assessments will either refer back to teaching staff, or introduce global interventions. BWS uses a Tier System to identify levels of support required, these work alongside external requirements such as those enforced by an EHCP.
In dealing with assessment and provision, the School will work in close partnership with parents, with the pupils themselves and also, when applicable, with the Local Authority and other relevant agencies.
The full details of the school’s Special Educational Needs and Medical Conditions Policy can be found here, as can the Wiltshire Council Local Offer.
Many pupils with SEND requirements undertake the 11+ or in year entrance examinations. When doing so they are provided with an appropriate environment in which to take the test papers according to evidence supplied. More information is available on the application process here.
Depending on the level of need, boys with SEND requirements who are offered a place at the school will be set up with specific transition arrangements to aid the move from their current school. These requirements are tailored to the individual needs of the pupils.
