Lieutenant Colonel George Woolnough MC (1914-2012) 

The last CO of 1st Battalion, The Wiltshire Regiment and the first of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Royal Regiment. He was awarded a Military Cross after leading an extremely hazardous night attack in the Italian campaign in October 1943. Woolnough left the Army in 1964 to become the founding secretary of the Friends of Salisbury Cathedral. He was also the area commander for the South Wiltshire St John’s Ambulance and churchwarden in his local church in Middle Woodford.
