Universal, Targeted & Specialist Support

At BWS, we have high ambitions and expectations for all learners, including those with SEND. Support is based on each learners level of need, these 'Tiers of support' work alongside external requirements such as those required by an EHCP. High quality teaching is at the core of our provision, and our universal offer ensures that we remove barriers to learning so that all students thrive and achieve their best. Any provision or support is on a needs-led basis and not dependent on any formal diagnosis.

There are 3 levels of support:

  • Specialist – Students with an EHCP (Tier 1)
  • Targeted – Students at SEN Support (Tier 1)
  • Universal – All students (Tier 2)

Tier One

*All students with an EHCP are Tier One

Tier one students receive bespoke support as their needs require specific interventions with staff both inside and outside of lessons. All students with Tier One support have a personalised learning plan which accounts for their strengths, areas of development alongside appropriate modifications for classroom practice. Parents of students with this level of support will have, at minimum, an annual meeting with the SENDCo to re-asses their plans and reflect on provision.

Support may include:

  • The option to spend break and lunch in and around the Learning Support department
  • 1:1 time with the SENDCo or other relevant professionals to help assess, monitor or determine appropriate interventions
  • Regular review meetings with parents
  • Collaborative work with external specialists (e.g., Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, CAMHs)
  • Exam Access arrangements, where appropriate
  • An adapted timetable, where appropriate

Tier Two

Tier two students have a difficulty or disability, but they do not require support that is additional to or different from their peers. As such, their needs can be met within our universal offer. Teaching staff at BWS are skilled and experienced practitioners who can adapt lessons suitably and meeting the needs of SEND students is a regular topic at INSET days and after-school meetings for staff where updates to practice are shared.

When students require it, additional elements from the list of support available in Tier One are also applied.
