Alumni and BWS Network

Alumni Community

When students leave Bishop Wordsworth’s Grammar School, we hope they will always feel part of our community as Old Wordsworthians (OWs). Our alumni network spans many generations, and most choose to stay connected through social events, sporting fixtures and an expanding careers development programme.

OWs regularly return to Bishop’s - whether for reunions, visits and tours, lectures or to support current Sixth Formers and young OWs with careers advice, mentoring and work‑experience opportunities. Interaction across the wider community, including former and current staff, parents and students, continues to grow and enrich life beyond the School.

The BWS Network

The BWS Network is a professional and social community for alumni, parents past and present, former and current staff and governors, and friends of the School. We are immensely proud of our history and of all those who have studied or taught here.

Please join us and become part of our growing global Wordsworthian community. Membership gives you access to reunions, dinners, networking events, career support, job opportunities, special events and publications, while helping you stay in touch with the School and with each other.

Volunteering

OWs give their time and expertise in so many ways, which has a tremendous impact on the life and culture of the School today.

Speak at an event

Many alumni, parents and friends contribute generously to our careers activities, societies and speakers programme, helping current students learn more about life beyond Bishop Wordsworth’s. These events and opportunities range from career advice sessions and our STEM Careers Conference to the HE and Careers Fair, as well as practical support such as practice interviews, speaking at events and lectures, offering work experience, and providing mentoring. If you would be interested in sharing your career journey and experience please do get in contact.

Host an event or provide a venue

We run a number of social and networking events for OWs, parents and students and we rely on the generous support of individuals who host events at their offices, clubs, restaurants and sports grounds ensuring we can keep costs low for attendees. If you have a venue that would suit a networking event, informal drinks or a dinner, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Contact Caroline Popham at cep@bishopwordsworths.org.uk to offer your help.

Events, Reunions and School Tours

Every year, we come together to celebrate those shared experiences through a variety of events - opportunities to reconnect with old friends, enjoy some friendly competition, and create new memories to treasure.

We are committed to keeping alumni connected with the School and offer many ways to get involved - from visits and tours, careers talks and mentoring, cathedral services and concerts, to social drinks in Wiltshire and London, cricket, rugby, archive events and reunions. Beyond the enjoyment they bring, many of these events also help raise vital funds that support the School - contributing to essential equipment and resources that enrich every student’s experience.

Donating to the School

Since 1890, Bishop Wordsworth’s Grammar School has been sustained by a tradition of generosity, with each generation benefitting from the support of those who came before. Our ambition is to offer an exceptional education that reaches far beyond the standard curriculum, but rising costs and limited government funding make this increasingly challenging.

DfE funding covers only the essentials needed to deliver the national curriculum: salaries, teaching resources, utilities and basic maintenance. It does not fund major improvements to our facilities, and although we apply for capital improvement funds when available, these are never guaranteed. For everything that makes Bishop’s distinctive - enrichment, enhancement, and progress - we rely on the generosity of our community of alumni, parents and friends of the School.

If you would like to make a donation of any amount, you will find all of the options here. However you choose to give, you will be helping to transform the lives of Bishop’s students - now and in the future.

Legacy Giving and the 1890 Society

There are lots of ways Old Wordsworthians can give back to their old school in their lifetime. Another way you could consider showing your support for Bishop Wordsworth’s and leave a lasting impact on future generations is by leaving a gift to the School in your Will. To recognise those planning to remember the school in their will, we have established the 1890 Society, named for the year in which the school was founded. Members of the 1890 Society will have the chance to learn about the future impact of their contributions and will receive invitations to exclusive events throughout the year.

As Bishop Wordsworth’s has charitable status there are also significant benefits for UK taxpayers to leaving a gift in your Will as it can help reduce the total tax liability for your family and overall estate. Find out more here
